Spoilers for people complaining about ‘White Washing’ in Ghost in the Shell

The original story ends with Motoko in the body of an effeminate Italian man.

Transhumanist sci-fi where several characters are globs of neural tissue in robot bodies – deal with it.

Media’s Go-Tos for Horrific Crimes: Gun Owners and now #Gamergate

“This was not a war zone. Journalists were doing a perfectly safe story all local TV stations do. Yet they get shot, on air. This is America.” – Ram Ramgopal, CNN Editor.

“Why did I do it? I put down a deposit for a gun on 6/19/15. The Church shooting in Charleston happened on 6/17/15… What sent me over the top was the church shooting. And my hollow point bullets have the victims’ initials on them… Alison made racist comments… I filmed the shooting see Facebook.” – Vester Flanagan, Murderer

Yep, this is America. Already we’re seeing this terrifying and tragic story being turned into part of the existing anti-gun narrative. No, it has absolutely nothing to do with a perfect storm of crazy and a race obsessed media.  But that’s not the only angle now.

Look out, Puppies, I know you’ve been accused of some bad stuff, but apparently you’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg.

Nevermind that the murderer gave us his exact reasons, it’s already being blamed on #gamergate.

In a virulent reaction to powerful, strong women who have gained opportunities following the emergence of the Feminist Movement in America, it has become common for failed men to turn their anger, fear, and vitriol at themselves onto women. Often, like Bryce Williams, onto women who are more successful and competent than they are.

Women working in the video gaming industry who had the nerve to speak out against the macho culture and over-sexualization of women in the gaming industry were met with threats of rape and murder. The trolls of #gamergate pounced with threats of rape and murder trying to intimidate these women into shutting up. (emphasis mine)

Fuck. Me.

As a Cuban American, I am not offended by this at all, so all of you non-Cubans can shut up about it* + Civil War Pt 3

I absolve you, you deep fried queen of the south.  May the set of knives with your name on the blades in my kitchen remain forever sharp.

Paula Deen

Hell, she fired the person who posted this and pulled it immediately. For the people who were all “if it wasn’t racist, why’d she delete it?”, she deleted because of people like this guy and everyone else who is all “Saved for evidence of racism!”

Besides, isn’t this just white-face?  You see, Desi Arnaz and many Cubans, myself included, are basically just white guys who tan really well.  Now that White-Hispanics are a thing, liberal white people have made it so that we’re not even allowed to be “People of Color” anymore.  Probably because a lot of Cubans have an anti-communist bent for understandable reasons.

This did get me thinking about food, though.  There’s a decent overlap between southern down home cooking and Cuban cuisine.  My mom, who grew up in the north, remembers how people thought she and her family were weird and crazy with their red beans, rice, fried porkchops & vinegar and whatnot; down in the south, though, no one bats an eye at red beans & rice.  Fried anything is good.  Food transcends race and could be bringing everyone together if people stopped saying that eating other cultures’ food is racist.  Down here in the south, we’ll eat anything.

Speaking of the South, if the South rises again, it certainly won’t be the next few turns of Civil War.  After all of the chaotic scurrying in the Trans-Mississippi in the first two turns, my endeavors there amounted to little more than a temporary distraction.  I overallocated my command resources there while I didn’t have the manpower or generals to take advantage of it.  Meanwhile, though Johnston and Jeb Stuart were able to split Kentucky down the middle, them union boys were able to get into Nashville by boat from Cairo.  Fort Donelson & Fort Henry were both burned to the ground, and an out-of-supply Army of the Tennessee had to fight their way back over rivers toward the capital, surrendering Kentucky to the damn Yankees.  That’s not the worst of it, though. That bastard Foot sailed down the coast of Virginie and into North Carolina and seized several ports.  The Army of Northern Virginia’s far too busy keeping McDowell in check and on his side of the Mason Dixie to pull back and do anything about it, and even if they could, it would leave the road to Richmond wide open.  I don’t know that I’ll ever get enough guys to do anything about them, because the Rebs have garbage railroads.  I’ll need at least a two star general to march off and do something about those ports.  At least my Texas rangers ran off those damn Injuns!

I’m not worried about losing or doing poorly, though.  My dad needs to break his losing streak.  The best part is, I can honestly say I’m not going easy on him.  Taking both the Tennessee heartland and the Carolina coastline was a master stroke.  The idea of Stonewall Jackson burning down supply depots all over Kansas and Missouri may have been neat and exciting, but it was ultimately derping around when I should’ve been focusing on keeping the rivers open.

*: If you’re Cuban and are actually upset by this, fine, whatever, but white tumblrites and twitter hipsters getting offended on our behalf can sod off.

Kuhraaayzee Search Terms and #Gamessowhite

It’s a shame that WordPress can’t log search terms from a lot of the most popular search engines; I’m always fascinated by some of the stuff that lands people at Cirsova, and there’s almost certainly a goldmine of weird in those thousands of “Unknown Search Terms”

The people who showed up on my blog looking for the following things probably left disappointed:

“up scurts of kameo the video game chrarter”
“Varg Vikernes Height”
“marie cachet height”
“peter pan nude”
“disney peter pan and wendy naked”
“giant boobs”
“bare butts peter pan”
“dracula’s dick”
“killing fantasies about women blogs”
“very edgy fantasies”
“nude character on gauntlet dark legacy”
“disney peter pan her buttock the”
“cat santa doesn’t exist”
“few examples of fantancy with your boyfriend”

I kind of wish I had time yesterday to rant about #gamessowhite and how cartoonishly stupid and false its base assertion is. It might end up being a flash in the pan, but I would not be surprised if major news outlets try to make hay out of it. From what I gather, it started off with some polemic on Polygon which claimed “straight white men are predominantly the main character in games” with no citation other than a link to a bunch of pictures of guys from games that I am unable to identify.

There is this strange notion that video games are oppressively dominated by white people and there’s just no diversity anywhere to be found in games. A lot of this assertion seems to be revolving around an attempt to stir up negative press for the Witcher games. I don’t know much about them and they’re not on my radar as far as games I want to play, but I think that Slavs have dealt with enough crap over the course of human history that you’d have to be some kind of an asshole to try to foist white guilt on them.

Are games dominated by white protagonists? I got to thinking about some of the games I’ve got and have played in fairly recent memory:

Morrowind – Pick your race!
Oblivion – Pick your race!
Kameo – Ambiguously light brown elf girl
Guardian Legend – Racially ambiguous battle-Gynoid
Q*Bert – Don’t know what he is, but I can tell you it’s not white!
Gauntlet Legends – Ensemble including women and non-white characters
Futurama – Play as a ginger, a cyclopean woman, a robot, and a jewish lobster man.
Xenogears – Stars a chinese man; diverse ensemble cast.
Parasite Eve – Aya Brea is white, but she’s a woman. Her partner’s basically Danny Glover, but that’s a rabbit hole we don’t need to go down.
King of Fighters 95-2003 – Well over half of the characters, if not 3/4 of them, are Asian, a few are hispanic, and at least one off the top of my head is black.
Street Fighter 1,2, and Alpha 1-3 – Again, diverse ensemble cast; some have pointed out that out of the first two games, there were only 4 “white” characters each. 1:Joe, Eagle, Birdie, Ken; 2:Ken, Zangief, Guile, and Vega (if you count hispanic as white)
Reboot – Enzo is green
Baldur’s Gate:DA – Human and Dwarf are caucasian, the elf lady is ambiguously shaded but could be called white maybe?
Norse by Norsewest – Okay, the viking dudes are pretty white.
GTA San Andreas – Play as Black man
Arkham Asylum/City – Play as Batman

Maybe my game shelf isn’t particularly representative, especially on account of how behind the times a lot of my tastes are, but it’s not like Madden is the sole balancing factor for diversity in video games.

So, devs are crapped on for cultural appropriation when they include stuff outside of their culture, they’re crapped on as bigots when they don’t include stuff outside of their culture, and actual diversity in video games is shoved under the rug because it goes against the “everything is racist/sexist” narrative. The issue with Rust (where devs updated to make character’s appearances random) is cited as proof that white people can’t stand the idea of playing a non-white character; to me, though, it seems more like people don’t like having the choice of character taken away and… wait a minute… You’re mad because people have said that they’d rather play as a character that looked like them while bitching about how players can’t play as characters that looked like them? Great job there, you goddamn stooges!

If you are so racist that you can’t stand playing as a white guy, there are plenty of other great games to choose from.  Those of us who aren’t grievance mongers who escaped into reality from some editorial page cartoon have been enjoying a wide range of diverse video game characters for years.

And for the record, I’m not black, but playing as Carl Johnson in San Andreas was awesome, and I’ve never heard of anyone who complained that they had to play as a black guy in a GTA game.

“I paid no attention to gender or race in my reading”

It’s like Heina Dadabhoy realized that she wasn’t a bigot and decided that she needed to a bigot to right some cosmic wrong.

As someone who is non-male and non-white, isn’t she being xenophobic by excluding white male individuals from her reading?

I’m not astounded that there are bigots on the internet.  Nor am I astounded that there are bigots on the internet claiming to be enlightened free-thinkers.  What is astounding is how many of them are wearing their bigotry as badges of honor and pride.  “I’m boycotting people because of their skin color and gender, and you should too!”  This shit has been everywhere lately.

People aren’t saying “Broaden your horizons!” They’re challenging themselves and others to narrow their horizons.  Culture and appreciation of literature isn’t some kind of zero sum game like these people think it is.  You can read books by any damn body.

And, you know, I don’t think I would be bothered by this if these people were like “Look, I’m a fucking racist and I advocate racist things.”  Be intellectually honest about this stuff, but don’t try to pass off exclusionary rhetoric bullshit while pretending that you’re some kind of enlightened equality for all humanist.  You’re not.  You’re a bigot, so just run with it.

Most people don’t give a shit about the color of their favorite author’s skin or whether or not they have dick or a vag or whether that dick or vag was god-given or man-made.  They give a shit about entertaining stories that touch their lives in some sort of way.  And the writer’s race, biological or sociologically constructed gender don’t change that a damn bit, except to bigots.

Some updates

It’s been a cold weekend going into a snowy week.  I haven’t done much productive, but had some stuff to share.

  • I’ll never level up enough to complete the main quest of Daggerfall as my Anthropologist unless I start buying skills from trainers.  I’ll seriously never run into enough Nymphs or Spriggans or Centaurs to get anywhere.  After playing this same character on and off for almost 4 years, I’m still at level 3.  But I’ve did summon the weird tentacle monster god and got the book that let me almost max one of my stats.
  • Racism is a thing in Japan.  Kind of like everywhere.
  • My DM has a Transformers tumblr.
  • William Usher released his 3 part story on the Kaku v. Szczepaniak saga the day after I published my interview with Agness Kaku.  Frankly, it didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know and was rather disappointing, but if anyone is interested in a rather lengthy rehashing of stuff (a lot of which can be read without commentary from the links I provided) that ends in a sales pitch, you can find it here.
  • Foucault’s Pendulum strikes me as the kind of book that Dan Brown wants but is neither well-versed nor eloquent enough to write.

#Notoallhashtags

Apparently #YesAllWomen is a response to #NotAllMen which was a response to some crazy dude who had issues with women and killed people.  The short version is that #NotAllMen are crazy homicidal lunatics who hate women and want to do horrible things to them, or even really engage in lewd or unbecoming behavior in regards to women, whereas #YesAllWomen  at some point in their lives have been or will be a victim of sexual harassment if not out-right rape or murder at the hands of a man.  In addition, there is also the accompanying assertion that by “Men” they only mean “those Men” and men as a class who represent a threat to women as a class.

I was messing around with a little experiment. When writing a post about “#YesAllWomen” and/or “#NotAllMen”, if replacing all of your instances “Women” with “Whites” and “Men” with “Latinos/Blacks/Arabs” creates the most disgusting and offensive thing you’ve ever seen, maybe you should consider tweaking your posts (or your activism) a bit.

You get some real gems, like:

“So why am I writing about all of this again? It’s because I’m increasingly seeing the phrase “Not all blacks!” cropping up in discussions about black violence against whites. It seems that many are insulted by the perceived implication that all blacks are violent, evil, rapists and murderers. It’s those people that I really want to read this post. Because you see, when we’re talking about issues like black violence and I refer to “blacks” (and obviously I can only speak for myself) I’m not saying that all blacks are the same. That would be ridiculous. What I’m doing is referring to blacks as a sociological group, in the same way that I might refer to the middle-class or the Latino population. And blacks, as a class, are a threat to whites, as a class. What I’m not saying is that any individual black is a threat. With me so far? Good.”

Pretty fucking disgusting, huh?  You can swap the races around however you want.  Blacks killing whites, Latinos killing Blacks, Arabs killing Asians.  Whatever, and you still get a god-awful mess that could come out of the mouth of a Kleagle, a Black Panther, whatever. The worst thing is, because of the ubiquitous whiteness of the internet, it behooves me to mention that I am a person of color, otherwise someone might accuse me of white privilege or something D:

Hashtag activism has to be the one of the worst things to happen to us culturally in the new millennium.
